OK, here's the take from someone 'local', who uses Bluewood at least twice a week in the season. First of all it's a small resort, (but larger and better than Spout Springs or Anthony Lakes, close by as well). The runs are short and they now groom nearly everything. The real fun is through their various tree parks however and the long walk/trek up to Ventnor's Ridge(sp) will bless you with a pure unspoiled, powder run of short duration. I've been going here regularly since '95-even ran a charter bus of kids up there for four yrs. The main lift chair is slow and run by a giant diesel engine (try finding that anywhere else, wait, why would you want to??). The lines aren't that bad anymore unless you hit a weird day scenario-Bluewood is not getting near the traffic it used to. Best riding and skiing is during the week-before the newbies carve everything up (hordes of beginners ). If you hit a good weather day, it's nothing short of phenomenal, albeit the runs are WAY to short. The resort is on Forest Service land and they (Bluewood), had a permit to expand for yrs. For whatever reason, they did not and it's my understanding that the permit has expired and the owners have the resort for sale. Read in between the lines here-they are just getting by and it shows. Nightlife in Dayton (you can't stay at the resort) is well, forget it unless you know someone that lives there. Although Dayton has a nice looking downtown, Dayton has some serious, backwoods social problems. On the upside, you can still bring your own food and eat in the cafeteria at Bluewood. Most of the bigger resorts insist that you eat out of the main dining area (or in some basement 'dungeon'). We locals use this resort a lot because of its convenience, nothing more. We'd all jump ship if there was something else as close and/or better. As they say around here, "It is what it is". This is a bad yr economy-wise to be raising the lift ticket price there. I don't know how that's going to affect things over all, but I won't go as much.
