Appalachian Ski Mountain is for families run by a ski family. It's located in the Blue Ridge region of North Carolina. Skiers and riders of all abilities are welcome. You will find nine slopes and five lifts that include two quads and one double chair. Appalachian Ski Mountain also welcomes ice skaters, too.
Where to Stay
Four chalets are located about 1 mile from the ski area. Ski and stay packages are available through local area hotels, motels, cabins, and inns.

Individual and group lessons. Equipment and clothing rentals. Recently remodeled lodge with restaurant, dining rooms, fireplace, TV room, lockers, game room, child care for ages one year to four years (advanced reservations necessary). Ski shop and gift shop. Ice skating arena and skate rentals.

I am an expert-level skier with experience of >30 years in >20 different ski resorts. I was impressed by this ski resort for its well-organized system for ticketing, locker, and rentals, and the quality of snow. I highly recommend this resort, especially for families with small children, infrequent skiers/snowboarders, or anyone who does not need the expert-only slopes.
This was my very first time taking my children (4 and 7 years old) skiing. Looking back at my own experience when I was their age, I was concerned about how much they would enjoy. My worries were needless. A very well-organized system and kind staff made it easy to go through all the rentals and lockers. They even taught my 4-year-old daughter how to wear boots! I cannot appreciate more for their service.
On the slope, an excellent snow quality with mild weather gave us the best experience. The snow quality was far beyond my expectations, especially knowing it was mostly from snowmaking. Their snow was much better than many ski resorts with mostly natural snow that I have experienced. My son (7 yo) quickly learned snow plough turns on the beginner slope with the conveyer and advanced to the intermediate slopes (Strudel and Orchard Run) by the end of day 1 and then the most difficult slope (upper big appal) by day 2. Their RFID and its scanner at the entrance to the slope were very efficient and made everything easy. We didn’t need to scan at the lift stations.
Finally, the resort is close to Boone and Blowing Rock and has many accommodation options with reasonable prices, especially compared to other ski resorts in NC.
We appreciated ASM much more, especially after our more recent visit to Sugar Moutain Resort, which had outdated facilities and not-so-kind staff with disorganized lift stations and parking.
Sure, this is a small ski resort with the longest course of only ~0.5 miles without a truly expert-only slope. So, I cannot recommend ASM for groups of only expert skiers. However, for families and beginners, this is an ideal place to start. Even those with intermediate skills (learning parallel turns) will enjoy a lot.
