Although a much longer drive from the San Francisco Bay than Tahoe, the actual drive time is often less since it's mostly I-5 which (unlike 80 or 50) is rarely shutdown due to weather. Mt. Shasta is the perfect place for a young family to try out skiing without breaking the bank. Watch the weather forcast and always be prepared for crappy weather. My kids, now grown, are excellent skiers and have skied the Rockies, Utah, and of course all the Tahoe resorts. We all still love Mt. Shasta; "we love it here"
