Snow is hitting TAOS Ski Valley this week, making it the perfect time to experience one of the famous powder days of this big mountain destination resort in New Mexico. Taos is forecasted to receive 1 to 2 feet of snow over Presidents’ Day Weekend. It couldn’t be a better time to book a TAOS Ski Valley ski trip.

From Kachina Peak to gladed chutes, steep ridgelines, and deep, wide-open turns, Taos powder days are legendary. Make your way to Taos so you don’t miss the goods as the snow stacks up. Here’s how to do TAOS right.

Getting To Taos

TAOS Ski Valley is a scenic and enjoyable–but more importantly–very doable drive from many states, including Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado. Denver, for example, is just a five-hour drive away. It’s even more convenient to fly. Direct flights are available to Taos from Denver, Austin, Dallas, Los Angeles, and San Diego on JSX, while other airlines, including American and United, fly into Santa Fe. It’s then just two hours to Taos from Santa Fe.

Savor the views on the way to TAOS Ski Valley. You’ll see everything from sprawling deserts to jagged mountain peaks to charming towns and villages, such as the rad village of Arroyo Seco, located 10 miles from TAOS Ski Valley. When you arrive, grab a breakfast burrito to-go at Bumps Market and a killer coffee at Black Diamond Espresso to fuel the day of adventure ahead.

Ski, Shred, Rip

After a warm up on one of TAOS Ski Valley’s more intermediate groomers, head to West Basin Ridge in search of powder slashes through pristine glades. Locals will share tips, like the lowdown on secret stashes or rope drops. If they ask you to join them on a hike, say “yes”. The run of the day will almost certainly be the wide open terrain and blower Rockies’ powder off the top of Kachina Peak.

Take a lunchtime break to refuel at the Bavarian for cold German beers and a juicy bratwurst. Then finish the day in Taos’ some hike-to terrain with endless chutes and trees to play in. Cap an epic TAOS powder day off with aprés-ski at the legendary Martini Tree Bar.

TAOS Powder Day Pro Tips

  • Book a guide. Want to have someone show you the best stashes and skip the line? Book a guide and level up your powder day.
  • Demo skis. Powder skiing is a completely different ball game – your equipment should change with it. Demo skis and boards from Taos Sports.
  • Upgrade aprés-ski by staying at The Blake. There’s aprés-ski and then there’s aprés-ski at The Blake, where you can enjoy a drink in hand while catching some R&R in its hot tubs and heated saltwater pool. Afterward, treat yourself at 192, located on the second floor of the slopeside hotel.
