Hop aboard the Heber Valley Railroad, where horse lovers and train aficionados in the Park City area can ride through time and relive the pioneering era of Utah settlers. The 100-year-old Heber Valley Railroad operates year-round vintage locomotive rides along train tracks that parallel the blue-ribbon Provo River. Passengers are transported through the lush Provo Canyon, which passes by panoramic views like the sheer limestone silhouette of Mt. Timpanogos or the high-desert meadows of the Heber Valley floor from the restored cars of the “Heber Creeper.” If one of the trains looks all too familiar, that’s probably because it is. Over the past two decades, the Heber Valley Movie Train has been featured in more than 35 films.

Though it’s not all scenic views and chugging engines: opt for the Reins and Trains package, and you’ll play a part in the action and adventure of true Western Americana. Outlaws frequent the railroad, and Black Jack Raven and his Soldier Hollow Gang are known to hold up the train, take hostages and force the captives to saddle up for a horseback ride along the range. From here, you’ll explore the Silver Hollow area trails by horse and dine on a picnic lunch in the fields before returning to the Heber Creeper. In the full spirit of the west, add a lodging package to your horseback adventure at the Homestead Resort in Midway.
