I skied the week before and after Christmas 2017. Snow was better before Christmas because temperatures were lower--mother nature has not been cooperating. The snow seems to be mostly man made and they do a great job of grooming overnight. However, by noon, it's mashed potatoes and then it freezes overnight and is icy in morning--especially on Nevada side. Rocks are more visible this week due to snowmelt. Only about 1/3 of trails are open due to lack of snow. Last week only the short, green run (Maggies) was open on the Calif. side. This week only one run from top of Canyon lift is open Ridge Run so lots of traffic on the few trails that are open from 11 am onward. This is not a beginner's mountain. The green runs are narrow mountain roads and they are the current access routes to the base used by all skiers so experts are whizzing by kiddos on the narrows. The mountain is spread out and there's a lot of flat connections that intersect with other trails to get back across or have drop offs to either or both sides. The narrow section at top of Stagecoach to get back toward California is narrow and beginners are always falling and cutting straight across while advanced skiers are trying to get up speed to make it through the flat areas to get down to Dipper. People that work there are super friendly. View is unmatched anywhere! Many days of sunshine. Great tree skiing when there's snow. Canyon lift not always registering your run so if you are on the Epic app, you may not get credit. Frequent wind holds on key connecting lifts.
