Skiing in the south. It may not be incredible but it’s all we’ve got.
Not a large resort, so it can feel super crowded when it’s busy.

Look let’s go ahead and get it out of the way. It’s not Breck, Vail, or Park City. It’s in North Carolina. The snow pack will not always be perfect. It will get icy. They don’t get snow every day. It’s just how it is, if you want great skiing every single day you should probably buy a plane ticket because it’s just not very consistent here. But let’s talk about some of the good things this place has to offer. Sugar offers a day’s worth of skiing without having to buy a plane ticket, and I think that’s pretty great. The resort is also laid out very well. Being a somewhat more affordable option to skiing out west, Sugar sees a lot of first time skiers. Thankfully, their bunny slope is served by it’s own lift and keeps beginner skiers in their own area, so there is less of a worry of dealing with people who can’t control themselves, etc. Their grooming operation is also top notch. Every morning you can find freshly groomed slopes which does a good job of cutting down on some iciness. Also, you can find a couple of genuinely steep trails here, which cannot be said for anywhere else in the area. Gunther’s Way is a solid match for a west coast blue and a lot of fun to ski fast. Tom Terrific and Whoopdedoo are both genuinely steep trails and when you add in some spotty snow quality have a pucker factor right up there with anything else I’ve skied. People need to cut this place a break. It’s not a west coast mega resort but they do a good job with what they have and that’s what counts. Also, for people complaining about the rental department, get your head out of your butt and rent from a local ski shop. It’s cheaper and you will receive better equipment.
