About Crested Butte

Crested Butte, dubbed “The Last Great Colorado Ski Town,” is the gateway to the Elk Mountains and Gunnison National Forest. In the winter, the adventures begin just three miles from town at Crested Butte Mountain Resort. Crested Butte Mountain Resort is home to 1,547 acres of skiable terrain and 15 lifts that serve more than 160 runs that range from easy-going groomers to technical steeps to glades and much more. It receives a generous 235 inches of snowfall each season. Bonus: Because Crested Butte is several hours away from any large cities, it doesn’t have the crowds of many other destination ski resorts in Colorado.

Come late spring and summer, Crested Butte turns into the Wildflower Capital of Colorado. Coloradans flock to Crested Butte during this time to experience its mountains and rolling green valleys peppered with bright florals in the spring and summer. It culminates with the 10-day Crested Butte Wildflower Festival in July, featuring guided hikes, photography and art classes, yoga, and more.

Need to Know Information

If you’d like to go carless for your trip to Crested Butte, there is a free bus service via the Gunnison Valley RTA and the Mountain Express. Many hotels in the area also offer shuttle options to and from the airport. The RTA goes between Gunnison and the town of Crested Butte, while the Mountain Express travels daily between the town of Crested Butte and the ski resort. The Bustang Outrider also offers bus service between Denver, Gunnison, Almont, and Crested Butte. Tickets for this service must be purchased in advance on their website. In general it is recommended to make transportation arrangements to your final destination before landing in Gunnison.

It’s no secret that a ski trip often takes more planning and preparation. That’s particularly the case when flying into a destination like Crested Butte, which has a smaller airport and is prone to winter weather. We recommend booking your flights as far in advance as possible. As you’re planning and packing for your trip, consider how you’ll be traveling with your ski gear. Many airlines, including United, count a ski bag and boot bag as 1 checked item so long as they weigh under 50 lbs. combined. For one less thing to think about, consider shipping your skis or snowboard or renting/demoing from one of the many esteemed shops in the area.

Finally, no matter where you’re flying, we recommend giving yourself some extra time. Winter weather, traffic, and the time to check ski gear and get through security can all be unpredictable.
