I live in Chicago so it’s an 8.5 hour drive. That drive turns off a lot of people (I can hear it now “I can fly to Denver for $250”) but as I tell my friends its worth it. Plan a long weekend (keep in mind they are east coast time). One day at Bohemia will tire you out and save your pocket book compared to out west. If you are a strong intermediate you will find plenty of fun terrain (you don’t have to ski the cliffs or the steep tree runs). The 900 foot vertical makes a big difference compared to the other Midwest hills. Ten to fifteen-minute runs are the norm… even if you don’t stop (hard not to stop because its technically difficult). The amount of snow they get is amazing and this year was more than some places out west. Part of the “danger” of Bohemia is that the runs are not groomed and there are lots of unmarked obstacles and trees in steep areas- so take the warnings serious. Its a natural terrain park (that is why I gave that 5 stars). The one problem with no grooming is that if you have a warm day followed by a cold night- the skier made groves and tracks are frozen the next day. So watch the weather and avoid that if you can. Speaking of watching the weather- that’s what the regulars do here- they are always on the lookout for a powder day (and there are a lot due to lake effect snow). The amount of snow they get (270 inch average) is no B.S. and will shock you. Bohemia sits on a peninsula that jets out almost to the middle of Lake Superior- so it’s a lake effect factory. The lake also keeps the temps a bit warmer than you would otherwise think for being so far north. The "Apres Ski" and lodging is quirky- but that’s part of the appeal of this place. Old guys like me and college ski bums. Not a place to go out to the bars and meet women, but that’s not why you come here. Lodging also fills up fast so book early. Trust me- believe the hype, leave the kids and beginners at home, suck up the drive and go experience Bohemia- you will become an advocate and believer!
