Schweitzer. She's like a beautiful, mysterious woman. Sometimes you can't see anything. The great winds howl down from Canada, moaning through the trees, whipping snow against your face. Everything is glowing white mist. Light so flat, you can't tell up from down. Is this heaven or hell? Yet, this is when she can give up her most sacred treasures.Head for the trees. They give depth, definition in even the flattest light. Hell or high water. One minute, you're tangled in a patch of bushes. The next, you break through a secret, open glade with golden sunshine glistening on a perfect pitch of untracked powder. And just for that moment, everything is right in the world. The clouds break, and you can gaze down the valley at the lake, and see the distant, lonesome peaks of some of the last true wilderness left in the lower 48 and wonder if somewhere out there, a moose is munching on some buried goodies in the snow. He probably is. He definitely is. Sometimes the snow is perfect. Sometimes its not. Sometimes your spouse curses you for taking him/her down a blue that was supposed to be easy. The sound of ice scraping edges, despair and grief. Sometimes some old crusty Grampus with his perfect form cuts by you on a blue groomer going 50 mph, peering at you with his red leathery face and gleaming sunglasses in the midst of his perfect carve. And you wonder if you'll ever be that old man one day. Knees blown out, bad back, no feeling left in the toes, but perfect technique. Perfect form. Grampus. Seek her inner beauty. She hold many secrets, many treasures in her depths and glades. This is not an easy mountain. It might even be a dangerous mountain. Your skies may become gouged and scratched beyond recognition. You might find yourself crawling out of the bottom of a deep gorge after a perfect powder run. Your quads may burn like hellfire. But at the end of the day, you might find that you love her. You might hate her. But she will always be Schweitzer.
