I worked at Kirkwood and have done most of the terrain and seen all the conditions a season can bring. If you are an advanced skier this is the place to go in Tahoe, it also gets the best powder, and has good snow retention /coverage even during drought. Good culture at the ski school and ski team. Main complaint in my opinion is only one high speed lift which causes a lot of bottlenecking and unnecessarily long uncomfortable lift rides often on very exposed double black slopes. Biggest chair takes 20 min to do 2k vert. Dining is limited and there is no apres here, things are overpriced like every ski resort/everwhere in california, and the resort is remote, 40 minutes from south lake and traffic can be terrible especially during a storm. With chains on, which are required to go over the passes it once took me two hours to get home to south lake. The pass closes often during heavy snowfall which makes getting up there impossible, and getting stuck likely. They also have a nice cross country area.
