I lived in Vail for five years and learned how to snowboard here. The terrain is great and there is quite a bit of variety. I personally like Blue/Black cruisers and tree runs and there are plenty of those. It can get very crowded, especially on the weekends/holidays when all the Denver/Front Range people drive up. There are times when there at 10,000+ people on the mountain. That being said, I could still go all day riding fresh powder. You just have to know where to look, especially off-piste. A majority of the people will stay on the front as there are a lot of beginners, families, and novice riders. The very far east side of the front is probably the quietest, although pretty steep. The back bowls are fun in powder, but can get tracked out quick. They also face south, so they can get pretty crusty or slushy. Again, it is less crowded on the east side of the mountain, Some of my best days have been back in Blue Sky and it's worth the trek. Again I prefer the east side and the west can get very windy. The trees here are amazing and with the terrain you cap find gullies and nature half pipes, and jumps. There are usually a lot of more experienced skiers/riders over there. Only a few runs, if any are groomed in the back and blue sky, usually it's just the catwalks. IF you want groomers head to the front side or Beaver Creek Yes, Vail has gotten quite corporate and expensive. The "town" itself is beyond built out. From my experience, daily tickets go up about $10-15 a year and last I remember they were around $140. If you're going for five or more days or multiple trips, just get an Epic Pass. You might even be able to use it on one of your local mountains.
