Red River Resort Reviews

Red River is a Great Family Ski Resort!! We drive up from Taos where we are much closer to another ski resort, which sort of seems like a ski factory, and very busy and very expensive. We like RR better. We feel comfortable at RR, super nice people, great snow making and not so crowded that you are unhappy with all the people on the trail. We've seen wildlife just off the trail, and on the beautiful drive to the resort. A sweet little western town with some shopping, restaurants and a brewery. Highly recommended this people friendly resort!!

I booked Red River for the family because it was billed as "good for beginners". It has been 10 years or more since anyone in the family has skiied, and we had an 8 year old first timer. The very expensive ski school for kids was billed as excellent. My grandson's instructor, Brian, spent most of their time talking to them while they learned to stand still on their skis. They went up the short moving lift only. By days end, he had skiied very little. When we asked about the lift, Brian sais that they did not get to the lifts until the kids had been in ski school 3 days. (to the tune of $750.00) I want safety, not inertia. By contrast, 30 years ago, his father at 7 took a lesson at Angel Fire. By midday, he was up the mountain, and took to skiing like a duck to water. In addition, Red River has only a handful of true green runs, unless you go to the back side of the mountain. While that area is excellent and has many true green runs, the only way down the mountain it a blue run billed as a green. Even the good skiiers in our group were challenged, and i do not know if my DIL will ever ski again. I avoid Taos for this reason-there are only 2 ways down-one where you pole forever and one like here that is steep and challenging for a true beginner. I would recommend going to Angel Fire if you want to stay in New Mexico or to Copper is you want a good set of mountains that segregates skiiers and is safe for all.

First time to ski this place. Wanted to try it. No waits. Many different runs. Lots of snow. Plenty of signs for runs so you knew where to go. Smaller place so less crowds. Easier to get around. Will definitely be back here. Easy kiosk to get lift tickets

Great size mountain for a family with kids of different ages and abilities. Got a good snow early in the week that made for great conditions. Had a wonderful visit and will definitely be back!

My mother-in-law had a cabin here for years. We did more cross-country skiing, but did do some downhill. The mountain would be a good one to learn on, but a more experienced skier will soon be bored. Unfortunately spring skiing is hit-or-miss because of the lower elevation. The town itself is really boring, just a few restaurants, none of which are very good, and no apres ski scene to speak of. Taos Ski Valley is better in every way.

This is a great little ski resort, and the town has everything you want. You have to understand this is not a large resort like Winter Park. It is much smaller. But the trade off is a lot less people. While the town is full and vibrant during the peak season, there are never long lift lines. But the town has great shops, friendly people, and a great selection of restaurants. The mountain does not have a lot of exceptional terrain, but it has a variety of blue and green runs for all levels of skiers to enjoy. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed. By the way, I recommend going to Colorado for spring break skiing. It is usually pretty warm in New Mexico at that time and the snow can be sparse and/or slushy at that time.

We've been skiing Taos, Purgatory, Angel Fire and Ski Apache for the last ten+ years. Mostly at Taos and Purgatory, only trying the others once. Red River is a nice mountain when they have snow. Not much snow at Spring Break this year. I don't know about other years. Spring Break can be funny, weather wise. We've been in blizzards and deserts, this year at Red River a desert. We skied three days. It got pretty slushy early. Some runs should have been closed but were not. Lots of exposed grass, stumps and...well, no snow. They do a pretty good job of bringing the mountain back up to speed by morning, but this spring break just didn't have enough snow for me. Coming down the top lift by 11:00 had big mixture of slush. I'm sure it's great when there is snow, I did see lots of people enjoying themselves. We left early our last day.
