The town of Crested Butte, the views, great steeps and the local people.
Lacking mountainside amenities, small quanity of novice and intermediate skiable acreage, difficult to get to from metropolitan areas, expensive for lack of mountain services.

This may be the ski vacation place for you if you are a die hard skier or snow-boarder. Even if one is not 'die hard', the town of CB (and other winter sporting activities here) are entertaining options that usually satisfy travelers. The mountain is unique - pointed as if it were the pinnacle of a church steeple, the east, northeast side of the 'steeple' is where most of the extreme stuff is located. The mountain has adequate intermediate or novice terrain but it lacks the shear acreage most comprehensive North American ski areas offer - unfortunately. Also, the slope-side amenities are basically nonexistent. It is akin to skiing a New Hampshire ski area circa 1969. I could care less- however, a family of four traveling from Chicago may be disappointed unless they are 'die-hard' skiers. The town makes up for where the mountain fails. It is a fantastic old coal mining town that has an abundance of character - much more so than the average ski resort - maybe the most character of any 'mountain' town near a ski area in North America. Overall, well worth the visit.
