EXTORTIONATE Price Increases

Full review

We have been travelling to Whistler from the UK since 2004, missing only 2 years throughout that time. Even though we always paid a premium to visit Whistler as it was our main holiday of the year and for a 2 week stay we thought it was special and worth paying way more than we would if we went to Europe, and there are some stunning resorts in Europe. However, we are absolutely stunned by the huge increase in prices in the last 18-24 months (i am assuming since the Vail takeover). We are coming back next year but this will be our last, time will tell if these price hikes make any difference to the attendance at Whistler over the next few years, if they don't then hats off to them, they would have driven away a certain clientele that were willing to pay already high prices but not wanting to get ripped off, but they would have attracted the super rich.. i guess from a business point of view its perfect for them BUT this may not be the case, i think they have to be careful, we are by no means wealthy but even those that are don't like being ripped off so will be interesting to see the figures in the next few years (assuming they are not massaged). To show i am not just fabricating my displeasure you can see the difference in prices of lift tickets in the attached image. The tickets on the left were purchased at the end of August 2016 for skiing last year, and the ones on the right are the current equivalent, also the current ones need tax added. I would have thought for most people this is an obscene increase (65% increase) - and the prices on the left (Aug 2016) are in Canadian Dollars. What is also interesting, when i first logged onto WB website for the pre booking tickets i thought the prices were way higher, so went to access my history of purchases over the years which were always stored, and low and behold they have all been deleted!!.. again just very iffy and underhand practice when you are about to make huge price hikes!. Luckily i had screen shots of previous years as proof or purchase. Coupled with the ticket price increases our accommodation costs have increased 35% since last year (and the exchange rate is favourable for us at the moment!). So yes we are coming back to Whistler in 2019 as we have committed and are looking forward to it, but this will be our last time. If prices come back into the real world we would love to return as we adore Canada, the Canadian people etc... Sorry about the negative post but a lot of people have spoken about it, with disbelieving responses, so wanted to provide some proof.

Whistler Blackcomb - Agreed. I just skied 19-22, flew from Miami, was $350 round trip. If this were‘95 it’d probably cost that to fly to Europe. And USD:CAD vs USD:EUR! - © iPhone 7 Jason
Whistler Blackcomb - excellent snow on the glacier - © anonymous
Whistler Blackcomb - Sunny last two days which made for great visibility. But compacted snow up top and slush at bottom. Still beautiful views. - © Amy’s iPhone
Whistler Blackcomb - Lots of powder but holy smokes man the visibility was terrible yesterday! Especially around Harmony and Symphony. Use caution!! - © Doug's iPhone
