    New York's ski area operators finally got some happy news this winter, courtesy of an unforgiving nor'easter, dumping tons of fresh powder in the Northeast.

    February and the settled cold have brought the number of rideable trails into the hundreds in New York state. Whiteface Mountain helps, of course, punching through with more than 60 open trails. Sunshine peeking through on the weekend and into the top of the week made riding aces.

  • Winter's Hitchin' a Ride In New York

    Riding's been da bomb in New York state, with winter chillin' with us for a spell. Colder temperatures and bursts of snowfall are supposed to hang in, straight through Super Bowl Sunday (hey, the game's not until Sunday night). Belleayre gets the attention of the ladies this weekend with specials Saturday and Sunday.

  • Lake Placid's Whiteface Lodge Sold

    A Connecticut developer has purchased Lake Placid's highly lauded The Whiteface Lodge Resort & Spa, the luxury resort that opened in 2005. Stamford, Conn., developer T-Rex Capital , which develops residential, commercial and government properties throughout the United States, announced Tuesday it purchased The Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid for an undisclosed price.

  • New York To Winter: 'Hello, Beautiful'

    In New York state and the rest of the Northeast and New England, winter finally walked in the door, a day late and a dollar short, but nonetheless here. Lake effect snows throughout the state helped those resourceful mountain crews firing snow guns 24/7.

    Most of New York's mountains squeaked by on the long Martin Luther King Jr. weekend as the psychosis of the 2006/07 ski season wore on. Ice storms here, some snow there, freezing rain here, rain there, and brave grounds crews warily watching temps to turn on snowguns. Still, we forge ahead.

  • Snow-starved New York State Bears Up

    A disasterous holiday season sent mountain crews at ski areas in New York state racing for snow-making machinery any time night time temps hit the below-freezing mark. It hasn't been enough to get more than a relatively few trails open than is typical this time of year.

  • Whiteface Doing the White Thing

    Sixteen trails with more on the way doesn't sound like much, but we're snow starved here in New York state and we'll take anything we can get. Whiteface has been taking advantage of high altitudes and cold(ish) nights to make snow whenever possible and, like a few other resorts in the Empire State, has managed to stay open.

    When heading to Olympic country, riders (and watchers), have some first-class digs to call home. The Whiteface Lodge, a gorgeous facility reminiscent of the Adirondacks Great Camps was named a "recommended property" by the luxury pub, Conde Nast Johansens.
