Reviews for Snowshoe Mountain
Total (3.3)
A ski resort's overall star rating displayed here is not calculated based on a simple average but takes several factors, including the age of a review, into account.
Vital stats first - I'm 53 years old with 30+ years skiing and have been an avid skier (2-3 times a week during season) for the last 20 years. The variety of reviews kind of says it all in terms of managing your expectations. If you are a "I ski one weekend/holiday a year" type skier then this is probably a great resort for you, lots of beginner slopes and it has a resort vibe with dining and shopping options. Be forewarned it is all exorbitantly expensive from lift tickets to lodging and meals. Lodging quality varies greatly and can be quite modern/updated to looking like a room that belongs on Stranger Things - do your research! Sitdown meals are expensive, on the order of $50 a head, and the quality is middle of the road at best.
Before I talk skiing, let me acknowledge the other activities available. Tubing is meh, honestly Canaan Valley has a MUCH better tubing park if you're into that thing, bit it's decent here and worth the coin for some time with the family - word to the wise though, it gets SWAMPED on the weekends. Snowmobiling was awesome. It is expensive but you get an hour of racing around snowmobile's on the slopes in the dark and if you are behind the lead vehicle you can absolutely bury the throttle while the tail vehicle cleans up the rest.
Skiing is a variable thing here honestly. First and foremost, the claims of 1500' vertical feet are misleading because that's JUST the 2 black slopes at the Western Territoty. The main mountain is a little over 600' and Silver Creek is likewise. Blues and blacks are wide and coverage/grooming is good most of the time, BUT they all intersect with a green somewhere on their run. That means that you will be going full speed down Widowmaker for 200' when suddenly a pile of beginners coming barrelling out of a trail merging onto yours followed by another group merging further down another 200'. Every intermediate/advanced run on the Main Mountain is like that with the exception of Camp 99, Sawmill and the Western Territory. The green trails by and large are the corridors for crossing laterally on the mountain, it is claustrophobic on a weekend with the number of skiers and feels dangerous with the lack of awareness of mountain rules and control ranges. Lift lines are 20-30 minutes minimum on a weekend. We had 10 minute lift waits during a non-weekend holiday and virtually no lines when we've been off of holiday timeframe.
From where I live in DC, there are much better daytrip mountains that either offer better terrain (Timberline) or similar actual vertical feet (Roundtop) without mixing ability levels on trails.
Bottom line - you are a beginner and want someplace that offers you a wide variety of options of activities/dining and ski out, this is probably for you. For the more advanced skier it's a question of whether 4 slopes (the blacks) and a few over at Silver Creek are enough to keep your interest and justify the price. For me, I'd rather daytrip to better terrain and save my pennies for out west, the Northeast or Europe.
Cheers!

Snowshoe only makes sense if you have an Ikon Pass. For $180 a day, this place is a joke. Short runs, short lifts, and long lines on the weekends. The snow is meh. But it's really the price that's insane and out of reach for most families. In fact that's seems to be the design. One other thing you you won't find is a cafeteria or place where families can bring their own lunches or meals to offset the insane lift price. Instead if a family wants to have lunch, it'll be forced to spend a minimum of $25 per person. Snowshoe is among the least family friendly resorts I've visited.

We have been coming here every year for quite a long time. Something changed this year and the stay was bad. The restaurants food and service have gone downhill and the hospitality is just not here anymore. We were only given 4 towels for five days to use for both showering and hot tub use. When we called for more, no one would answer the phone. We had to go to the front desk at Top of the Mountain to ask and we were told there is an extra charge. We were only given 2 rolls of toilet paper for 4 people for 5 days. When we called for more we were told we have to go to the grocery down the street and purchase more. On the busiest day of the season, they shut down the 2 main lifts leaving only a few available runs. We will not be coming back again. They have lost our business.

While it is not my favorite resort it is a decent place to go if you just want to spent a couple of days within a moderate distance from MD. While I understand their policies on ticket sale refunds for capricious reasons, I don't understand their adamant stance when you have a medical issue . I tore my meniscus just a week ago and will be going into surgery on Monday Dec 23rd ( AND CAN PROVE IT ) yet they refuse to refund or defer my 3 day ticket until next year. I would not advise saving the few dollars buying a pass like that ahead because unfortunately this resort will not be helpful and while most often we can keep our winter plans intact life does have a way of changing things. So to save a few almost meaningless bucks, you end up wasting 300 plus. Having been a patron of this mountain for way more years than I can count, I will scratch this off my list and go elsewhere. I would not recommend buying anything ahead of time to save a few bucks, they are no help. I guess corporate greed at its finest is what comes to mind.

My husband and I didn’t not have the experience we were hoping for. We arrived Christmas day, extremely excited to ski, booked a last minute room and stayed for the night. We were passing by and decided to give it a try. We did not make it for day skiing, that day so bought tickets for night skiing and next day skiing as well. Literally as soon as we paid over $800 for night and day trip plus ski rentals it began to rain within 15 min. Non stop raining all night!! We aren’t experts at skiing so we decided it was too dangerous because of all the rain, very dense fog, and lots of wind. We turned around to explain that we did not feel comfortable and wanted a refund, but we were denied. It hadn’t even been 15 min since I put in my card to pay!! We were refused a refund, the staff was adamant that there was no problem with skiing even though we felt uncomfortable. While we were trying to figure things out other customers came in and were worried about the skiing conditions as well. Staff was extremely rude and unaccommodating towards the situation. We explained over and over again we were just passing by and would not be able to use any sort of credit or other day ski passes, but unfortunately the only answer we got was we can give next day ski passes with a long pause and stare. It would have been a total different outcome if staff would have empathized with us, given is a refund and told us they hoped to see us back at the mountain soon, we would have been excited to go back. With the way this was handled I know we will never go back! This was such a discouraging situation for me and my husband. I do not recommended this place if you are just passing by, especially if weather changes you will be out over $800 and without a solution.

Need better lifts, less crowding, more food choices.

What a terrible weekend at Snowshoe and it has been like this for years and only getting worse. The lift lines here are crazy long and takes any fun of skiing right out of you when you hit these lines. CRAZY long and are so outdated in their chairs they don't seem to care. I will have to head up North to hit some places that just don't have these lines. I have never seen anything so bad for so long. Hey Snowshoe they make 6 or 8 man high speed lifts just and FYI

Skied 3 years in a row on MLK weekends
Some of the black runs are very long for East Coast and fun. The snow condition can be variable but the condition can be surprisingly good due to grooming and snowmaking. On-site dining is very limited (more options without seating), and the crowd can be a big issue on any lifts that serve green.

Overall we had a great time. I think it might be rough for a beginner. It would be awesome if they offered an adult refresher class for those who haven't skied in a few years. We would definitely love to go back.
