I always have a good time at Cataloochee, I've been there 4 times this season and plan on going again really soon.
Best thing about this place, the workers are really friendly and so are the people there. Great for beginners, this can frustrated intermediate, or season skiers and riders. They don't know how to get on the lift, get off the lift, cut the lift lines they break a whole lot, and go all over the Mountain.
Cataloochee would be AWESOME if they would have better line management. A lot of times, you can't wait your turn, cause you'll get passed a couple of times. You'll have to cut, because no one else will be polite and give you your turn even though your next.
For intermediate, and season skiers and riders stay in line for the lifts on the far left of the resort, since most beginners stay on the beginner lift on the right, you get up the mountain a lot quicker.
When I when on the 17th the whole mountain was open for the first time. It was cold but the top of the mountain did not have enough coverage, so it was a little icy, but still very rideable. Unlike Sugar when it's icy.
