Overcrowding, No Lights (night skiing), Young Crowd
Hunter is probably the most popular mountain in NYS, which explains why it gets so crowded on the weekends. As with all mountains in the North-East (spare a few in Vermont and New Hamphire), the vertical rise is nothing to write home about. Show me a long trail here and I will show you a flat one! Traverses are all flat so snowboarders should probably avoid them.
I don't knock a mountain due to conditions out of there control, but I cannot discount the fact that just about every time I have gone to Hunter it has been very icy. Again, it's the northeast, nothing can be done about the wind and the climate, but I would definitely suggest picking a day after recent snow and with very low winds.
There are a lot of young kids flying around at Hunter. Good for families, except for the icy conditions.
Personally, I have had a lot better experiences at local options like Belleayre.
