decent trails, varying terrain, stuff on the sides, no lift lines, uncrowded
let me start by saying that when i visited gunstock, due to new england weather (unseasonably warm) snow natural or otherwise had been scarce, so a good amount of trails were closed. Bearing that in mind i dont think i got the full experience, which may have contributed to the three star rating. Ill have to give it another go at some point in the season when the weather is more cooperative so i can get a full go at mountain.
I got on the mountain at about 11am. 4 to 5 inches was in the forecast and some fresh was already accumulated over the man made base. had some fun hunting little stashes of powder on the sides or runs and in general bombing around the mountain which was pretty much empty (it was a wednessday). As it was pretty empty i decided to try something in rarely if ever try, park. I'd rate myself an advanced rider at freeriding but beginner to low intermediate at park. I hit the skiers right side of the mountain to see what the park had to offer. The lift went right over the main park which had relatively large features, at least large enough to be out of my skillset. So i made my way to the small park. unfortunately the small park was VERY small. 2 rectangle boxes that were dug into the same level as the surrounding snow, and 3 or so small bumps/jumps. granted its a good park for little kids to get the first taste of park, however i was looking for more, small on the medium end.
After that i headed back to the main area, continued to enjoy the slopes, my one issue is the serious amount of flats on skiers right of the main cluster of trails, if your not prepared or expecting it, you'll most likely be walking. Spent most of the day messing around on the main slopes and- cutting through side trails as well as sessioning a nice little 3 or 4 foot rock ledge on the side of one trail.
final thoughts, new england weather makes for tough times. enjoyed myself but i feel it could have been better. will return when the weather is doing better,
