Most of the time, the lifts run flawlessly at Lutsen. As a matter of fact, I've never had a problem, until today. After skiing all day, we got in our last run a little before 4pm. We skiied down to a lift that closed at 4 and got in line. We then noticed the line starting to back up, and people not getting on the lift. I skiied up to the lifty and asked him what was going on, and if we could still get up the hill (the lift was running, but no one was allowed on). He said that yes, we could still get up, but we would have to wait. And so we waited. And we waited some more. Then finally some lifties came up on snowmobiles. Thinking this was our cue, we got ready to catch a lift up.But instead, we waited more. Finally, two ski patrollers showed up, and shortly after we were allowed to board the lift. What was the deal? Why couldn't we ride the lift up prior to the ski patrollers showing up? If a lifty tells you it's last chair, you don't make another run because you really don't want to be stuck at the bottom of the hill with no ride up. Couldn't the lifty let us on, and tell us last chair? Apparently not. This is a new flaw in Lutsen's lift operations that I have not noticed. It was frustrating waiting at least 10 minutes for a chair, and the sheepish lifty wouldn't provide us with any more information than "just wait." Lutsen should probably publicize their lift policies a bit better, or revamp them altogether. What was a solid day of skiing on beautiful spring snow on a gorgeous day ended on a low note.
