Meribel (1,450m), known as ‘Little England upon the Alps', is a firm British favourite. In fact, Brits make up almost half the total visitors and much of the hotel and bar staff; ask for un verre de vin rouge and expect blank faces. The annual influx of Brits means you can easily get by without speaking a word of French, but it also means prices are high, British voices are everywhere, and nightlife can be boisterous - shots of toffee vodka and dancing on tables is a prerequisite at Le Rond Point bar.
Although a purpose-built resort, high-rise developments have been banned in favour of chalet-style architecture. As a result the resort has grown out rather than up, extending more than 10 kilometres across the valley floor. The more well-heeled visitors stay around Méribel Centre and the rest up at Méribel-Mottaret, while Courchevel in the next valley is popularly regarded as being more French, more chic (and even more expensive).
The local ski area has enough varied terrain to keep all abilities happy. It also has the enviable location of being in the centre of the Three Valleys - the biggest lift network in the world. So if you tire of Meribel's (150km) local ski area, upgrade to a Three Valleys Pass for access to a whopping 600 kilometres.
The resort may not be everyone's cup of tea, but its extensive skiing and lively apres-ski make it package-deal central.
