I've been coming to this place since the mid '90s, and sure-- if you don't plan your trip carefully, if you're a herd animal who insists on skiing weekends and holidays, and if you have NO appreciation for how hard it is to keep a resort alive in So Cal-- of how crushing the economics are b/c of drought and AGW, okay-- go ahead and hate on this place. I was there yesterday afternoon and evening, and the management had PUMPED snow all over the mountain and almost ALL of it was open-- even crazy little single-black diamonds mid-mountain I hadn't skied in 15 years. That costs them real money, and they did that even though NO ONE was there. There were NO lines and that means if you're an advanced skier, you can ski about seven or eight runs per hour-- and for the first two hours, I rarely skied the same run twice. The layout and engineering of the runs is really well thought out... maybe TOO well designed for some. I admit, you won't find complex or double fall lines here, and the glade skiing is limited, but hey, it's a local family resort, it's not Snowbird. From the top of high-speed quad, you can get to the bottom of Conquest, from the top of Conquest, you can get to the bottom of the high-speed quads. (This review is for MH West, MH East is actually my favorite, ideal for skiers, but rarely open. Full disclosure: It sucked that the lift at East broke down in January but again: Major drought, revenue is hurting, if it were my mountain, I wouldn't fix it until it broke, either.) The four-day deals are good, the risks minimal if you plan carefully-- even skiing three days of a four day pass is $56 a day. Finally, the vibe is just really cool mid-week. I'm a 59-year old who skis on 1988 straight skis, and there is just so little tension and attitude between skiers and snowboarders beyond rare and inevitable confusion where trails merge. I felt NOTHING but respect and encouragement from people of all ages, races, etc. and mad props to the staff-- big shout to Nathan and his friends, you guys take great care of the mountain and totally cracked me up.
