Kirkwood is one of the most incredible mountains you probably never heard of. If you are looking for epic apres ski.......Stay in south lake. If you want epic terrain, lack of crowds, and some of the deepest snow on earth.....Kirkwood is for you. Last weeks 4 day snow total was over 12 feet, 144 inches. Don't worry, most storms only drop 2 or 3 feet so if you are afraid of too much pow, relax. Besides they do what is called "high angle grooming." the snow cat groomer is mounted with a winch and the cable is connected above at the peak. Steep terrain with buttery soft grooming. Chair 6 and 10 will offer a fine sample of the frontside, but the backside has the goods too. I know many people who tell others the wood sucks just to keep it quiet, but i will put my selfishness aside.
Ok for all those haters talking about sierra cement. First of all the wood's base is at 8000 ft so the snow quality is much better due to the colder temps. Utah and colorado do have lighter fluffier snow, but trust me the pow at kirkwood will float skiers and boarders with no problem. In fact the "sierra cement" actually makes for a very sturdy base, preserving conditions and making the existing snowpack under the surface pow and packed pow quite stable.
If you are a beginner do not be intimidated. Kirkwood offers top notch instruction, equipment knowledge, and intro. Terrain. If you can handle lifts 5 and 11, it is time to take chair 6 to the top.
For those with more experience kirkwood's terrain has it all, wide open steeps, natural gullies, a variety of trees, tons of rock hits and jibs. If you think the wood is soft and you are owning it, sign yourself up for the u.S freeskiing championships at kirkwood next year and let me know how it goes for you.
The terrain parks are strong, but not the best. I mostly freeride and have been to almost every mountain from beaver creek to bristol mountain. I vouch for kirkwood 100% and i can say with absolute honesty....Kirkwood changed my life ....Sniffle sniffle. I'll see you monday kirkwood, i'm coming home.
