Excellent tree skiing, giant beginner area, steep terrain, powder days
Slow lifts, lines on weekends
Snowbowl has the best terrain in AZ, hands down. For beginners, the Hart Prairie area is one of the best places to learn to ski or snowboard with its long, wide and gentle slope. The tree skiing is some of the best, it's the perfect slope and openness for those who like to weave and find hidden powder stashes.
Sunrise is better for getting in a large amount of runs with their high speed lift, there's no arguing that. But the runs on that mountain feel like half the length and have constant flat spots, so the terrain is severely lacking compared to Snowbowl's long, pitched runs. Their beginner area is too steep for first-timers and is only about 75 yards long, not the ideal place to learn to ride.
Bottom line: Snowbowl has the best terrain in AZ for beginners and advanced skiers alike. The lines on weekends and especially holidays can get unbearably long, but the resort has plans to add a high speed quad and a third lift for intermediate/advanced skiers within the next season or two. This place is about to realize its true potential with the addition of snowmaking as well.
