North facing slopes, good snow record, uncrowded pistes, unpretentious, busy town, shopping, transport links
beginners areas hard to get to, lack of modern hotels, little off complex ski bus

St. Johann is an underated resort except by people in the know. Often overlooked by skiers because it has 2 neiighbouring ski areas, Kitzbuhel and Ski Welt, which are much larger, with very modern lift systems and greater choices of accommodation. Fine, if you prefer to ski on crowded pistes and queue for your lunch. Apart from the 2 high season weeks, St. Johann is less crowded and for me far more enjoyable to ski than it's neighbours. It is actually possible to practice carving turns safely and to ski without looking behind you. Nearby Fieberbrunn, on the same lift pass, nearly always has better snow than other resorts in Tirol. And if you purchase an All Star pass you can be in Kitzbuhel in 10 mins by train or Going/Ellmau in 15 mins by bus if you want to join the crowds. It is not the perfect beginners resort but better than most, and a good instructor will choose the best terrain to allow for a natural learning progression. It is perfect for intermediates who can manage red runs as they can ski the whole mountain and access the quietest pistes away from the Gondola over towards Eichenhoff. Due to the cone shape of the mountain you can get from one side of the ski area to the other very quickly. It an excellent choice for parties with non skiers as the town is very buzzy during the day and has great transport links to Kitzbuhel and other towns in the region.
