[R46R, Whitefish Mountain Resort] throws family-friendly events onto the end of the holidays. A Christmas Cruise, rail jam, and torchlight parade with fireworks liven up the slopes.

Families can ski together during the Christmas Cruise Dec. 29. Participants, who ski the blue runs on the mountain, can win prizes just for entering. The more runs you ski, the more chances to win prizes. Entry for the event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., is free, but lift tickets are required. Those who ski or ride at least 10 blue runs are eligible for additional prizes at the Baselodge at the end of the day.

New Year's Eve events offer plenty for spectators at the bottom of Ed's Run. A rail jam at 5 p.m. launches the evening, with skiers and snowboarders hitting custom-built rails under the lights. The competition in the jam rewards hitting the most features as much as possible in a set amount of time during the show and judge-picked best riders and skiers in categories.

Registration, course inspection, and training for competitors runs 3 - 4:30 p.m. Competitors, who must be at least eight years old and wear helmets, are required to deposit $5 for a bib, which is returned at the end of the competition when the bib is returned. Entry is limited to the first 60 competitors. Awards will be on at the bottom of the rails following the torchlight parade.

The annual New Year's Eve torchlight parade and fireworks show follows the rail jam at 6:15 p.m.
