The warm cycle is over and New Mexico is ready for ski season. Those strong early storm systems that swept through New Mexico in October got everyone amped but then warmer temps thawed the anticipation. Now, cold temperatures and the opportunity to make snow are back. Sipapu in fact was able to open a week ahead of schedule, More than 700 eager skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes Nov. 21-22, more than doubling last year’s record-breaking attendance for both opening day and opening weekend.

"We purchased some new snowguns this season, so we've been kind of tinkering with them," Sipapu's Marketing Director Stacey Glaser told the Taos News. "This was our earliest start in about nine years. We're pretty excited. We haven't seen a weather pattern like this, for this time of year, in about a decade. It's cold and it's staying cold, and that's great for snowmaking."

Mountain heads are proud of being the first resort in New Mexico to open. [R454R, Taos Ski Valley] has been blowing snow 24/7 for that white Thanksgiving beginners and intermediates can enjoy. [R337R, Red River] and [R14R, Angel Fire] have also been snowmaking but Angel Fire plans to stick to its late Dec. 12 opening date.

[R346R, Ski Santa Fe] delayed its opening until after Thanksgiving so there is still plenty of time to book a trip to come out and celebrate Santa Fe's 400th anniversary.  The Inn and Spa at Loretto is offering an anniversary-inspired ski package to celebrate. Santa Fe's allure has grown during the past four centuries and is today recognized as one of the world's top art markets, a mecca for Southwestern fashion and design, a culinary center for the local and sustainable movement, and a fine ski destination. With 660 skiable acres, a 12,075 foot summit elevation, and an average 225-inch annual snowfall, Santa Fe's diverse terrain gives skiers and snowboarders miles of challenging trails and panoramic vistas all within 20 minutes of downtown Santa Fe. The Loretto Package includes two nights lodging, four lift tickets to Ski Santa Fe, complimentary hotel parking, and $20 hotel food and beverage credit daily. This package starts at $296.21 and is available for through March 31, 2010.
