The long wait for winter is finally over for skiers of Summit County! Last weekend hundreds of skiers and riders celebrated the surprise opening of Keystone and Arapahoe Basin Ski Area.

Keystone kicked off its ski season on Saturday, which marked its earliest opening in more than 20 years due to the investment in upgraded snowmaking! Despite this amazing feat neighboring resort A-Basin gave an impromptu announcement on Friday that it was to open that very afternoon!

The opening of A-Basin's intermediate High Noon run was a great surprise for impatient skiers. After wrapping up its 2018-19 season in July, A-Basin was closed for just 99 days - the shortest off-season in its history. A-Basin Chief Operating Officer Alan Henceroth wrote in his blog: “We did this because the snow is really good, our people are anxious, and we are ready to go."

Keystone may not have been the first US resort to open for 2019/20, but it certainly attracted the highest number of skiers. Hundreds of snow worshippers packed the packing lots and lined up for the River Run Gondola. The crowd were treated to free donuts ahead of the final countdown at 8:30am.

Keystone credited its early opening to recent investments in snowmaking infrastructure. Its top-of-the-line snowmakers are able to detect ambient conditions and start working automatically. This has enabled the resort to extend the season and open before mid-October for the first time in 20 years.

Both ski resorts have one slope open and an 18-inch base on a mix of natural and man-made snow.
