When Mother Nature refuses to cooperate, ski resorts call in the snow guns. These trailside weather creators produce snow out of thin air, using compressed air and water pumped from snowmaking ponds at resort bases to transform barren slopes into winter’s first skiable white ribbons.

Although snow guns aren’t pleasant to ski near, the compact snowflakes they create hold up well to grooming and have a longer lifecycle than natural snowflakes. While resorts across the country continue to add and develop their snowmaking operations, a few standouts offer more snowmaking acreage than anyone else.
