Meg Olenick is one of the young slopestyle stars of the U.S. Freeskiing Team. Raised just outside of Aspen, Colo., Olenick has been skiing park since she was a kid, following in the footsteps of her older brothers, Michael and Peter. After a series of knee injuries, she is looking for a strong season in 2012/2013 to solidify her spot on the 2014 Olympic team. Olenick will be blogging for OnTheSnow this season as she prepares for Sochi in 2014.

I always have my best ideas when I am driving in my car. Something about the free time and the open road gets the mice spinning upstairs. This time it involved 35 young girls, some soccer balls and two close friends.

Growing up in the Rocky Mountains, in a little town outside of Aspen, I had the opportunity to try every sport under the sun. Some I loved and some just weren’t for me. I was fortunate enough to have many influential coaches and people to look up to while growing up. Those people have taught me life skills and gave me a path to follow. My thought: Why not spend two days and give back to the younger generation?

Fact: By the age of 14, girls drop out of sports at twice the rate boys do.

Goal: Create a positive environment for girls to play various sports and feel confident while doing so.

35 girls, ranging in age from 5 to 13, gathered on a Carbondale, Colo. soccer field for a two-day free camp. Along with my U.S. Ski Team teammate, Jen Hudak, and another one of my girl friends, we led several hours of sports activities and fun.

Confidence was insured with positive affirmations and friendships were made left and right. From soccer to kickball to yoga to relay races to egg toss, the girls left with beaming smiles. I received an immense amount of support from various companies and the town of Carbondale and would not have been able to pull it off without them.

Looking back on the weekend, I couldn’t be happier with the turn out. The girls made it clear that they were appreciative and some mentioned that they would join a sports club because of the weekend. Hearing those words out of a young girl’s mouth was enough to make me want to organize this event year after year.
