Now the local Matterhorn Gotthard Railway timetable has been extended and coordinated with the arrival and departure times of long-distance services and offers "20% more trains" between Zermatt and Andermatt- Göschenen/Disentis. The last connection to Zermatt now runs two hours later leaving Brig at 22.30 hours (instead of 20.30 hours), arriving in Zermatt at 23.44 hours. A 24-hour shuttle train-connection between Täsch and Zermatt from Thursdays to Sundays has also begun operating and will now continue year round.

In related rail news The Matterhorn Gotthard Railway has also receive five new multiple units with panorama carriages at a total cost of 45 million CHF. Two of them are now in service and carry travellers in comfort from the new junction station in Visp to Matterhorn village. The other three units will come into service in the course of 2008.

Going up the mountain from Zermatt, four new low-floor, twin multiple units have also come into service. Trains from Zermatt (1604m) to the Gornergrat (3089m) now take 33 instead of 42 minutes. For skiers, there are six through trains in the morning and they reach the summit station in just 29 minutes - a new record.
