It took five days to build Emil the gentle giant at the ski area of Galtür and he is now proving a huge attraction amongst visitors with his friendly face and casual pose as he leans on a mop and gazes across the Paznaun valley.
A Tourist Office spokesman said, "This is the second year running we have built a giant snowman and it is so popular that I think it will become a regular feature in Galtür. This is definitely Austria's biggest snowman and we think that at 16.7 metres high it is the biggest in Europe."
Not to be outdone, the neighbouring village of Ischgl is holding its annual Shapes in White exhibition where teams of sculptors shape blocks of snow - this year's theme is Aliens.
