The big winner of the latest snowfall is Garmisch with a 50cm accumulation on the Zugspitz glacier, one of only four ski areas still open in Germany.

In Austria the glacier at Solden has received 22cm and Kaprun 40cm of new snow and in Switzerland it's Gstaad and the Glaciwer 3000 that has seen a similar fall - 30cm in fact.

It had been very warm in the Alps over recent days until yesterday (April 12) but it is getting cooler again now and up to 50cm of snow has fallen on the Austrian, Swiss and German Alps in the past 24 hours. But with temperatures well in to double figures at 2000m at the weekend many lower ski areas have been struggling to stay open or to provide decent conditions if they do.

Over the next two days the chance of more new snow is quite high - it is continuing to get colder and the snow line should get down to 500m.
