Such is the case with Sweden's ski touring centre up in the Arctic Circle at Kebnekaise (, next to the country's highest peak which opens this weekend. It offers a vertical drop of 1500m - huge by Scandinavian standards.

"The mountains are covered with snow and conditions are very good," said a statement from the centre. "With an infinite number of runs, no lift lines and no expensive lift ticket, there's no excuse not to come here."
Tours of 1-7 hours for all abilities are available led by local guides and facilities at the local accommodation centre include gear rentals, a restaurant and a sauna with mountain views. A snowmobile taxi will take you to the base of the hill each morning.
