Telemark skiers have been celebrating their sport at [R157R, Grand Targhee] for over 27 years. Their one-day event has now evolved into a multi-day festival for freeheelers.
The festival, which is co-hosted by Targhee and Yostmark Mountain Equipment and sponsored by Black Diamond Equipment and Telemark Skier Magazine, is scheduled for Feb. 27 - Mar. 2. It features clinics, races, ski demos, live music, food, and more unique events, such as a mini telemark huck-fest.
The weekend launches with a fiesta on Friday evening for a showing of the film Powder Whores 08. Saturday and Sunday feature instructional clinics for all levels of telemarkers. Clinic instructors include sponsored athletes, demo team members, and PSIA trainers.
The race on Sunday is no traditional affair. It's a combination race and disco costume contest, which morphs into a party with live music and local beer from Grand Teton Brewing. Prizes-season passes, skis, boots, and bindings-are given away at the party.
Monday features backcountry skiing guided by Yostmark Backcountry Tours. An avalanche awareness slideshow and beacon search contest are also included in the festival events.
Telemark skiers are invited to join the festival for one or more days. Discounted lodging and lift tickets are available for participants. Call 800-827-4433, ext. 1352, for more information or to register for the Telemark Festival.
