Great Bear Recreation Park plays host for the 20th annual Media One FunSki this weekend, Jan. 30-31. The event raises nearly $500,000 for the Children's Inn, a center in Sioux Falls for women and children who are victims of domestic abuse.
A full slate of events for those who just want to play in the snow to proficient skiers and snowboarders takes place during Friday and Saturday. The weekend draws big crowds to Great Bear, not only participants, but also spectators who just want to watch some of the action.
Those with artistic talent can enter the snow sculpture contest Friday. Winners of past contests have won with a working fireplace and a train, carved completely from snow. Entry costs $100 per block.
Snow tube team races start Friday night. A $200 entry pays for a team of four to challenge past champions for fastest time.
Skiers can enter three races with two age group categories for $12 or $22 per participant per event. Elimination rounds whittle skiercross competitors in four-person heats down to winners. The Downhill Corporate Cup bring out the spandex to race the clock. The cross-country race, which hasn't been thwarted by vacant snow for a couple years, plans to be back.
Snowboarders also can enter two events for $12 or $22, depending on age group category. Both the snowboard slalom and boardercross are scheduled for Saturday.
