[R338R, Granite Peak], Wisconsin's largest ski area with over 70 runs and a 700-foot vertical drop, is hosting its first German Fest Saturday, Jan. 24. It  promises to be fun and entertaining; after all this is a state with a strong German heritage.

The skiing and riding got off to an early start this season with lifts opening before Thanksgiving. Conditions have continued to improve as the Heartland is enjoying one of its best starts to winter in recent decades.  Spend the day on the slopes and enjoy the sounds and smells of a good old fashioned German Fest around the base lodge.

The menu includes brats, kielbasa, sauerkraut, and hot German potato salad in the outdoor grill area.  German beer will be available in the New Saloon (that's the actual name of the saloon) and, of course, lots of polka music.  Hey, this is cheesehead country, and don't forget the lederhosen.  There's a Show Us Your Legs 'n Lederhosen Contest that begins at 1 p.m.  Knobby knees are optional.

The Peak packages with a number of motels, hotels, and quaint B&Bs in the Wausau area, and there are often some good deals available.  Check out the latest offerings and hot deals online.
