[R416R, Spirit Mountain Recreational Area], owned by the city of Duluth, has unveiled a new master plan, which will upgrade and update the whole facility, which is already a great Heartland ski area.  The plan calls for some new lifts, repositioning of others, terrain expansion, new snowmaking equipment, enhancing the tired old main chalet, adding a new chalet at the bottom of the mountain, and more, according to the ski area's Briana Johnson.

"We are currently prioritizing the improvements and just starting our fundraising efforts to implement the improvement," she said.  "It's a multi-year project, but we won't know how long it will take until we get into fundraising and see how that goes."

They hope to make snowmaking improvements next summer and add a new tubing hill if all goes well this year.  Other improvements will come along in future years.  They hope to add a new lift-served summer mountain bike park, expand the popular summertime campground, add a new RV park that would be available year-round, and add a couple more maintenance buildings.

Spirit Mountain, with its 700-foot vertical drop, offers some of the region's premier slopes, and, overlooking Duluth's harbor on Lake Superior, provides some of the most scenic views in the Midwest.
