The Alberta government chained the 38,000-square-foot lodge closed last winter. The ailing lodge, built for $2 million in 1967, is in need of dire repair. Zrinko Amerl, President of Fortress Mountain, estimates the lodge's worth today at nearly $9 million. "This unique resource has been around since mid-sixties, and it should be preserved for Albertans for generations to come," he says.
To date, Amerl has yet to secure the five permits to proceed with renovations. Now he plans to apply for historical designation for the building. He says, "Fortress Lodge with its unique design, its historical importance in development of Kananaskis Country, and its contribution to skiing in Alberta should have important place as one of Alberta's' historical resources."
