Keep It Safe

Resorts in this article: Aspen Snowmass, Keystone, Powderhorn, Steamboat, Vail
Snowmass and Buttermilk will focus on the terrain parks. Guests get an Aspen/Snowmass bandana, if safety questions are answered correctly. The Aspen Highlands Avalanche Dog will be on hand for demonstrations.
Stop by Keystone's "Play It Safe" tent at the top of the River Run Gondola. Staff and ski patrollers will be there to hand out goodies including sunscreen, lip balm, granola bars, lozenges, coloring books, and stickers to promote safety awareness and wellness in the high-altitude environment of Keystone.
Local Olympians will be signing autographs in Steamboat. The Ski Patrol is offering on-mountain safety tips, and talking at the schools. They'll be doing helmet checks, and many shops are offering Boeri and Marker helmets at 20 percent off all week.
Powderhorn is producing a safety video, focused on the Safety Code.
You'll see Vail's Ski Patrol and their "Yellow Jackets" out and about, enforcing the Safety Code. Keep an eye out for the Vail Safety Pig.
The Responsibility Safety Code reminds you to ski in control and be able to stop and avoid objects. People ahead of you have the right of way. Don't stop on a trail where you aren't visible. Yield to others when merging or going downhill. Keep your equipment safe, especially to prevent runaway equipment. Watch for posted signs and warnings. Stay off closed trails and out of bounds areas. Know how to load, ride, and unload a lift safely.
Other safety tips include being in shape if you're planning to hit the slopes for the first time, drink a lot of water, wear sunscreen and eye protection, and always ski or ride with a buddy, especially on powder days. Lastly, don't forget your helmet.
