All programs are free of charge and a nice break from a day of skiing or boarding on the Porkies downhill slopes.
"This place is incredible in the winter," said Park Interpreter Bob Wild. "What better way to see the park and experience winter, than by participating in one of these naturalist-lead programs."
Snowshoeing along the Union River is available Dec. 28 and 30, 2006, and Jan. 3, 6, 13, 20 and 27, 2007. Each program begins at 2 p.m., and you can bring your snowshoes or borrow a pair from the park. This 90-minute, moderately difficult guided hike meanders through the wildlife-rich hills, ridges and ravines along the scenic Union River.
The Deer Yard Snowshoe Hike – available Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24 at 2 p.m. – takes you among old-growth hemlocks and cedars to learn about deer wintering habits while seeing some of the most beautiful areas of the park.
Lantern Light Cross-Country Skiing is available Dec. 28 and 30, 2006, and Jan. 3, 6, 13, 20 and 27, 2007, from 6-9 p.m., and also Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 6:30-9 p.m. Old-fashioned kerosene lanterns illuminate a one-mile loop for a unique and memorable skiing experience.
