Freeride Flies High At Copper
It was off to Copper for the 11th Annual Suzuki U.S. Freeskiing Open, after the X Games at Buttermilk. Pros and amateurs battled it out for over $60,000 in cash and prizes, in superpipe, slopestyle, and big air.
The Big Air Invitational was under the lights at Copper, with all of the action in full view of the base area and Burning Stones Plaza. American Colby West threw down the biggest air of the competition with a Switch 1080 Stomp, clinching the championship title for Big Air.
Finnish hero A.J. Kempainen and American Jess Cumming went big and bold in the Superpipe, taking home their first U.S. Freeskiing Open wins. Kempainen scored a high 89.25 in his second run, starting off with a switch 720 into a rightside 9, going for double grab with corked out style. The crowds weren't there like before, as it was Super Bowl Sunday.
