They may have cancelled their scheduled June 9 opening dates but both Coronet Peak and Mt Hutt came through with the goods within days. Coronet Peak opened on Monday, June 11 and Mt Hutt opened the following Wednesday. Avid skiers and boarders got in some turns on the M1 and Big Easy trails on Coronet Peak thanks to low temperatures allowing the snow guns to work at full capacity. The Coronet Express quad chair, Meadows double chair and the magic carpet were all turning. Mt Hutt has pumped 21 million litres of water into snowmaking in the past week to ensure Highway 72, Broadway and the beginners area were all in groomed condition for opening day. The minus nine degree temperatures means there is now a 20 - 25cms base to start the season. The quad chair and magic carpet both opened with even a few terrain park features for riders to get in some rails on day one. Mt Hutt has introduced more snow making to their terrain park for the 07 season. The North Island's Mt Ruapehu is set to open with Turoa's new high speed six seater chairlift this Saturday, June 16.
