[R517R, Zermatt]'s solar restaurant on the glacier paradise (Klein Matterhorn) has been awarded the 2010 European Solar Prize in Berlin.

This recent title, awarded Dec. 10, comes just three months after the solar restaurant won the 2010 Swiss Solar Prize for new buildings back in September.

Set at 2883 metres, the solar restaurant fulfils the requirements of the Minergie-P standard and is considered a role model for the entire Alpine region.

The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (Klein Matterhorn) in Zermatt with its viewing platform was opened by Zermatt Bergbahnen AG in the winter of 2008-09. It produces all the electricity needed for heating and ventilation using the photovoltaic system built into the facade.

Zermatt Bergbahnen focuses on three things when developing its infrastructure: energy efficiency, use of renewable energies, and Co2-free electricity to operate the facilities.

Future improvements to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise include looking into how to improve the design of the Matterhorn glacier paradise viewpoint to accommodate larger visitor numbers.

Zermatt offers skiing and snowboarding 365 days a year. In winter 350 kilometres of piste attracts skiers of al levels with unlimted terrain stretching between Switzerland and Italy. Twenty kilometres of pistes are open on the Zermatt Theodul Glacier during the summer months.
