Construction this fall is putting the finishing touches on a new $6 million conference and athletic training facility at [R199R, Kimberley Alpine Resort.] The building will provide meeting space for conferences and house the Kimberley Alpine Training Centre built specifically to enhance para athlete alpine skiing.

"The Kimberley Conference and Training Centre is a game changer for para alpine ski racing and training," Matt Mosteller, vice president of Resorts of the Rockies that owns Kimberley, told OnTheSnow. "There is no facility like it in the world that caters to specific needs of para alpine athletes, and this center will provide those athletes the edge needed to excel."

The 24,000-square-foot facility located adjacent to the base of the North Star Express chairlift was a joint project between the City of Kimberley, Columbia Basin Trust, and Resorts of the Canadian Rockies. The facility will be open when the ski season begins.

The building intended for year-round use was designed to exceed British Columbia energy efficiency standards and used local timber in its production. Its conference rooms can sit 500 people in theater-style seating or 350 people for banquets. Four break-out meeting rooms are also available.

The athletic training facilities for the Kimberley Alpine Training Centre (KATC) include a fitness center, changing rooms, a wax room, and a large pre-function area. KATC can provide space with a dedicated FIS-homologated race run on Dreadnaught for training, camps, or races. Equipment-gates, drills, radios, timers, fencing-can be rented, and a full race management and crew is available for race production, including World Cups. The building was designed specifically to support Paralympic athlete training with all facilities fully accessible, but it is open to any alpine training.

KATC is launching its first season with the International Paralympic NORAM scheduled Feb. 9-12 with downhill and Super G racing. More than 40 para athletes from 8 countries are expected to attend.
