Eyewitnesses and a crash scene study reported that Greg Doda, then 16, of Crownsville, Md., straight-lined Laramie Bowl traveling up to 47 mph before crashing into Heather Donahue, 29. The impact broke Doda's snowboard in half, while Donahue was "knocked out of her gloves, skis, poles, hat, goggles, neck warmer and catapulted about 25 feet down the hill," according to Teton County sheriff's Investigator Mike Carlson. Because Doda was a teen at the time of the accident, prosecutors rejected seeking a felony manslaughter charge and a possible 20-year sentence. After pleading guilty to criminally negligent homicide, a misdemeanor, Doda received a one-year sentence with six months suspended and the remaining six months stayed. Before pronouncing sentence, Teton County Circuit Judge Timothy Day told Doda, "This nightmare was no mistake. It's absolutely clear you were going way too fast, period."
