[R18R, Appalachian Ski Mountain] in Blowing Rock, N.C., built a new beginner slope and teaching area over the summer, and asked guests to come up with a name.

Jolie Nance won with "Avery's Appal" after the 2-year-old daughter of Appalachian General Manager Brad Moretz.

Avery looked at the construction work and told her brother, "That's my slope." Her mom posted the exchange on Facebook, and Jolie took it from there.

The new slope is near the base lodge, between the maintenance shop and the sprinkler pond reservoir.

It has a new Sunkid conveyor lift that will allow skiers and riders to unload to left or right, effectively dividing the slope into two distinct areas.

Avery's Appal will give beginners an area of their own, separate from higher traffic terrain.

The slope will have automated snowmaking and lights for night skiing.

Opening day is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 19.

Family season passes cost $700 for the first two members until Oct. 1, then $725. A third family member is $300, then $325. Fourth and subsequent family members are $215 each.
