[R462R, Canyons] has dropped the 'The' along with the old Smokies bar, the original lift ticket office, and the old gondola entrance. Starting this season, riders will be able to hop off the cabriolet, cross the village center and board the gondola to the Red Pine Lodge. No more trudging through the stone plaza to the Grand Summit Hotel, carrying all your gear. This first phase of the re-creation of Canyons is complete.

A new chairlift takes the place of the old gondola. But this one rocks. Guests load into a bubble-enclosed quad lift with heated seats from the Grand Summit Hotel.  It will stop at the mid-mountain Lookout Peak before continuing uphill and south of the current Sun Peak lift. Skiers will hit the top of the mountain in nine minutes; a far cry from the wake-me-when-we-get-there trip in the old gondola.

Canyons just can't help itself. It's grown again. Utah's largest resort is getting even larger. A new detachable quad has been erected on the southern-most part of Canyons. Iron Mountain will often be sun-exposed so count on inconsistent snow conditions, but guests will be able to access 300 acres of northwestern facing skiing and snowboarding terrain. Check out the 10 new runs, ranging from intermediate to expert to gladed tree skiing. Use Timberline Lift in either direction to get to the south side of Canyons and back.
