Powderhorn Keeps Getting Pounded
December was a record month at Powderhorn, with 132 inches of snow, which is nearly double the previous record set in 1983. It kept going in January, with a huge snowfall day late in the month, resulting in a foot of snow.
"It's just been incredible," said Powderhorn's Sarah Allen. "We received 24 inches the day before we opened, causing an 'all hands on deck' situation to prepare the mountain and base area for the public the next day. We all helped shovel snow and setup signage, fencing, etc. Although not expected, we all pulled together and had a great time doing it."
You can take a guided mountain tour, offered every weekend and every holiday, all season long, if you're curious about Powderhorn and the Grand Mesa. The tour is twice daily at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and includes stops at scenic overlooks, informative facts, and trivia about Powderhorn and the surrounding area. Sign up in the Day Lodge lobby near Guest Services. The tour lasts about one hour.
